The Maldives government has contracted India-based Renaatus Projects to expand and modernise the Gan International Airport infrastructure, The Hindu Business Line reported.
As part of the $29m contract, Renaatus will construct air traffic control tower, fire station as well as upgrade and renew the existing terminal, parking facilities, roads, duty-free shops and restaurants.
Works on the project is slated to start this month and conclude by 2025. It will be funded by India’s export finance institution, Exim Bank.
Operated by Addu International Airport, Gan International Airport was originally built by the British as a staging post for its RAF during 1950s. It was handed over to the Maldivian Government in 1976.
Renaatus Projects, part of RPP Group, engages in constructing public infrastructures, irrigation systems, government institutions and others across Maldives and Mauritius and Tamil Nadu in India.
Local newspaper DT Next quoted Renaatus Projects chairman Selvasundaram Poosappan as saying: “We have been in the industry for over two decades, and have developed the capability to provide solutions for construction needs.
“We have a strong foothold in Maldives and Mauritius and aspire to emerge as a key player in the construction industry in India as well. With our pan-India expansion plans and infrastructure and housing projects in the country and abroad, our group is poised to achieve a turnover of Rs3,500 crore by 2030. We hope to create employment opportunities for 30,000-40,000 people by that time.”
